Australia elections – level 3

08-05-2025 07:00

Anthony Albanese has won re-election as Australia’s prime minister, defeating the conservative leader Peter Dutton in a major landslide.

This is the first time in over 20 years that a prime minister has won two elections in a row. Albanese’s Labor Party is expected to win around 85 seats, well above the 76 needed for a majority. Peter Dutton not only lost the election but also his seat after 24 years. Experts say his campaign, which copied some ideas from Donald Trump’s policies, started strong but lost support after Trump’s tariffs raised concern among Australian voters. In contrast, Albanese focused on popular issues like healthcare, clean energy, and the rising cost of living. His team also targeted younger voters, who now outnumber baby boomers, by using podcasts and social media.

Now that Labor has won big, they must keep their promises to maintain support. One challenge for both major parties is that about a third of voters chose independents or smaller parties, showing that many Australians want something different.

Difficult words: landslide (big win), outnumber (to be more in number than someone or something else), baby boomer (a person born between 1946 and 1964).

What methods did Albanese’s team use to appeal to younger voters, who now outnumber baby boomers?
