Why women have menopause – level 2

30-04-2025 07:00

Menopause is when women cannot have babies anymore. Some animals, like orcas, also experience menopause. Most animals keep having babies until they die, but some stop having babies early. This happens to humans and orcas.

Scientists wonder why menopause happens because it doesn’t help survival or reproduction. One idea is that humans live longer, but orcas live longer, too, and they also stop having babies. Another idea is that having babies at older ages can be dangerous, but research shows this is not the main reason. The most popular idea is the grandmother hypothesis. It says older women help their families by taking care of their grandchildren. This helps the family, and it is better than having more children.

Difficult words: survival (staying alive), reproduction (making babies or new life), hypothesis (an idea to test).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Which hypothesis proposes that menopause evolved because older females enhance their family’s success by caring for grandchildren rather than having more children?
