New houses stop wildfires – level 2
03-06-2025 07:00
A new neighborhood in Escondido, near San Diego, has strong protection from wildfires. It is the first place in the US built with better safety than what the state rules ask for.
KB Homes and a safety group worked together to make this happen. All the houses are built to stop the fire from spreading, even when the wind carries small burning pieces. The builders used strong and safe materials. The garage and front doors are metal, and the shutters are covered with special materials. These things stop the fire from starting or getting into the homes.
Wildfires destroy many homes in California. That is why the builders wanted to protect the whole neighborhood, not just one house. This plan helps make people and their homes safer.
Difficult words: protection (keeping someone or something safe from injury, damage, or loss), safety (being safe), shutter (a cover for windows).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What materials and design features did the builders use on the garage and front doors and shutters to prevent fires from starting or entering the homes?
