A new Stalin statue – level 2
03-06-2025 15:00
In Moscow, people have put a new statue of Josef Stalin in the Metro. In the past, Russia removed his statues because of the many people who died when he was in power.
Now, the government shows him as a strong leader and the winner of the war. Some young people also say he helped the country. President Putin’s adviser says the Soviet Union still exists because its end had some legal mistakes. Some politicians and groups agree, and they say the war in Ukraine is not a war between two countries but a problem inside Russia.
Many people in Russia are changing how they think about the past. It helps the government explain what is happening now, like the war and problems with the West.
Difficult words: remove (to take away), adviser (a person who gives help or ideas to a leader), legal (about the law).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What explanation does President Putin’s adviser offer for the continued existence of the Soviet Union?
